- John Augustus Roebling was an engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He became world renown for constructing a famed NYC landmark. Roebling studied architecture and engineering at the Bauakademie, -Berlin in 1824 and also learned hydraulics and bridge construction there. He met with "visionary" John Etzler who convinced him to try the U.S. for more employment possibilities After settling in Western Pennsylvania he established his own businesses there with his new idea of constructing bridges using braided steel cables instead of rope cable. Roebling involvement with improved bridge work was noticed by engineers in NYC. In 1867 he was appointed as chief engineer for an important project- The building of the Brooklyn Bridge.
